Homocysteine is a variant of the amino acid cysteine, differing in that its side-chain contains an additional methylene (-CH2-) group before the thiol (-SH) group. In Escherichia coli homocysteine (Hcy) is the last intermediate on the methionine biosynthetic pathway.
