These are organic compounds containing an aldehyde substituted with a keto group on the C4 carbon atom. 4-hydroxy-2-oxoglutaric acid is invovled in Glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism. 2-Keto-4-hydroxyglutarate aldolase also plays a role in respiratory metabolic pathways, which suggests a mechanism for respiration resumption during the termination of the SOS response.
